Every day in local and global news, we see the impact of darkness all around us, even if it does not directly touch us or our loved ones. Increasing accounts of violence, mass murder, racial terror, hate crimes, low-character leaders exploiting their positions, and deadly natural disasters and pandemics can fill us with gloom. When we want to think of the good in the world, negative images of this present darkness can overwhelm us. How can we bring light into such a dark world so the light of God’s love and the joy of living can shine through?
God’s word reminds us, “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden." (Matthew 5:14 NLT). Start today shining light wherever you are planted through the gift of your smile, even to strangers; extend unexpected acts of kindness to those around you, especially those in need; and speak possibilities instead of problems, to pierce the darkness and bring light into the world.
